Overview
E-liquid nicotine strength is the amount of nicotine in each millilitre of liquid, and in the UAE it can legally go up to 20 mg/ml. Picking the right strength matters more than picking the right flavour: too high feels harsh and can make you dizzy, too low leaves you vaping constantly. This guide explains how strength is measured, what each common level means, how it changes between freebase and salt nic, and how to choose or lower your strength over time. Every product we mention sits within the UAE limit. Nicotine is addictive, and vape products are for adults aged 18 and over only.

How e-liquid nicotine strength is measured
Labels show nicotine strength in one of two ways: milligrams per millilitre (mg/ml) or a percentage. They mean the same thing at different scales. 20 mg/ml is 2%, 12 mg/ml is 1.2%, 6 mg/ml is 0.6% and 3 mg/ml is 0.3%. So “20 mg” and “2%” on two different bottles describe the same concentration.
To work out the total nicotine in a bottle, multiply the strength by the volume. A 30 ml bottle at 20 mg/ml holds 600 mg in total. A 120 ml bottle at 3 mg/ml holds 360 mg. That’s why a big freebase bottle can contain less nicotine overall than a small salt nic bottle, even though it looks like far more liquid.
Strength on its own doesn’t tell you how a vape will feel. The same number feels different depending on whether the liquid is freebase or salt nic, and on the device. A high-wattage sub-ohm tank vaporises much more liquid per puff than a small pod, so it delivers more nicotine at the same mg/ml. Read strength alongside type and device, never on its own. If you’re new to the two types, start with our guide to freebase vs salt nic. If you want to go lower than 3 mg, see our low-nicotine vaping guide and zero-nicotine vape guide.
Strength levels explained
Most e-liquids sold in the UAE fall into a handful of standard strengths. The table shows what each level is typically used for and the type of liquid it usually comes in.
| Strength | Percentage | Usual type | Typical device | Example we stock |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 mg | 0% | Freebase | Any | Nasty Juice Fat Boy 0mg |
| 3 mg | 0.3% | Freebase | Sub-ohm tank | MEGA 120ml 3mg |
| 6 mg | 0.6% | Freebase | Sub-ohm or RDL | GLAS BSX 6mg |
| 12 mg | 1.2% | Freebase | MTL tank | Dr. Vapes 12mg 60ml |
| 18 mg | 1.8% | Freebase | MTL tank | RIPE Vapes VCT 18mg |
| 20 mg | 2% | Salt nic | Pod system | Vozol Salt Prime 20mg |
The pattern is simple: the lower the device’s power and the tighter the draw, the higher the strength it’s designed for. Big-cloud devices use low strengths; small pods use higher strengths. Our full e-liquid range shows the strength on every product page.
The UAE 20 mg/ml limit
E-liquids sold in the UAE fall under the national standard UAE.S 5030:2018 for electronic nicotine products. It sets the maximum nicotine concentration at 20 milligrams per millilitre, and packs must state that sale to anyone under 18 is prohibited (Tobacco Control Laws – UAE e-cigarette policies). Products must also be certified through ECAS, the conformity scheme run by the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT).
In practice this means 20 mg is the top strength you should buy. For freebase it’s rarely an issue, since freebase juices sit between 0 and 18 mg. For salt nic, 20 mg is both the legal ceiling and the most common pod strength, so it’s the default for most pod users.
You’ll see stronger liquids advertised online, especially 35 mg and 50 mg salt nics made for other markets. They are above the UAE limit. When choosing a liquid, check the strength you select at checkout, not just the flavour name, because some product lines are sold in several strengths. Our UAE vaping rules guide covers the wider legal picture, including where you can vape and travel rules.
Match strength to your device
The single best way to choose a strength is to start from your device. Low-power pod systems such as the Uwell Caliburn, Vaporesso XROS and OXVA Xlim families run coils of about 0.6 Ω and above at 10–25 W. They give a tight mouth-to-lung draw and small clouds, so they’re built for salt nic at 10–20 mg. Browse these in our Pod Devices category.
Mouth-to-lung tanks with coils above 1 Ω sit in the middle. They suit freebase at 6–18 mg. Sub-ohm tanks and pod mods with coils below 1 Ω, running at 40 W and more, produce big clouds and vaporise a lot of liquid. They need low-strength freebase, usually 3 mg and sometimes 6 mg.
Putting a high strength in a high-power device is the most common mistake we see. A 20 mg salt nic in a sub-ohm tank delivers far more nicotine per puff than intended, and most people find it harsh within a few puffs. The reverse, a 3 mg freebase in a small pod, usually feels unsatisfying and leads to chain vaping. If you’re unsure which style your device is, our DTL vs MTL guide explains how to tell from the airflow and coil.
Signs your strength is wrong
Your body usually tells you quickly when the strength is off. Signs it’s too high include a harsh, scratchy throat, coughing on a normal puff, feeling dizzy or light-headed, nausea, and a racing heartbeat. If any of these happen, stop vaping for a while, drink some water, and switch to a lower strength or a lower-power setting. Don’t keep vaping through the discomfort.
Signs it’s too low are less obvious. You find yourself taking puff after puff without feeling satisfied, you’re refilling your pod or tank much more often than expected, or you get cravings soon after putting the device down. Going up one step, for example from 3 mg to 6 mg on a tank or from 10 mg to 20 mg on a pod, often solves it. Remember the UAE limit is 20 mg/ml.
Also rule out the device before blaming the liquid. A worn coil, a leaking pod or airflow set too open can make a correct strength feel weak or harsh. Fit a fresh coil or pod first, then judge the strength again. If you have heart, lung or other medical conditions, or you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, nicotine isn’t recommended; see our Responsible Vaping / Health Disclaimer and speak to a doctor.
Lowering your strength over time
Many adult vapers choose to reduce their nicotine strength over time. The simplest way is to step down one level at a time and keep everything else the same. Stay with the same flavour, same brand and same device, and only change the strength. That way you can tell whether the new level suits you, rather than reacting to a new taste or a different coil.
Brands that sell one flavour in several strengths make this much easier. The GLAS BSX Series is available in 0, 3, 6 and 12 mg, and LOADED 120ml comes in the same four strengths. For pod users, lower-strength salt nic around 10–12 mg is the usual step below 20 mg.
Give each step a week or two before deciding. If you find yourself vaping much more often at the lower level, you may have stepped too far; go back up one level. Vape Store Web does not market e-liquids as a way to quit smoking, and nothing in this guide is medical advice. If you want to stop using nicotine altogether, talk to a healthcare professional about proven options. Our best e-liquid brands in UAE guide lists more in-limit bottles.
E-liquid nicotine strength FAQs
These are the questions customers ask us most about e-liquid nicotine strength. For help choosing a strength for a specific device, message our team on WhatsApp between 10:00 AM and 11:00 PM.
Is 20 mg nicotine strong?
For a salt nic in a small pod, 20 mg is the standard strength and the UAE maximum. In a sub-ohm tank, 20 mg would be very strong; tanks normally use 3–6 mg freebase.
What does 0 mg e-liquid mean?
0 mg liquid contains no added nicotine. It’s used for flavour only, or as the last step when someone has reduced their strength over time.
Is 2% the same as 20 mg?
Yes. 2% nicotine equals 20 mg per millilitre. To convert, multiply the percentage by 10: 1.2% is 12 mg and 0.3% is 3 mg.
Can I buy e-liquid stronger than 20 mg in the UAE?
The UAE standard for electronic nicotine products caps e-liquid at 20 mg/ml, so 20 mg is the highest legal strength. This guide only recommends liquids within that limit.
